How does hypnosis work

Many people ask me the question: Does hypnosis work? When I tell them it does, I usually get the following question: How does hypnosis work? The answer to this question is a little bit more complex than the first answer, but I’ll try to make it as comprehensible as possible.

The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states that ‘In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist.

It is these suggestions that help the patient make changes within themselves. So, does hypnosis work because the therapist dives into your brain and makes changes there? No, absolutely not. In hypnotherapy, the patient is always in control and you can not be made to do anything you do not want.

There are however different forms of hypnosis and they all work in a slightly different manner. Let’s take a look at the different types.

How does hypnosis work – Different types of hypnosis.

1) Therapeutic Hypnosis

As described above, the therapist guides the patient into a deep state of relaxation. It is this relaxation that helps the patient go into an alpha state of mind. It is in this state that the mind is susceptible to suggestions from the therapist. It can also be used to recall suppressed memories and/or feelings.

2) Self hypnosis

In essence, all forms of hypnosis are self hypnosis. You can not be made to do something you don’t want to do. For instance, nobody can make you kill another person, no matter how good of an hypnotist they are. But, what is usually meant by self hypnosis, are guided meditations, binaural beats tracks or induction scripts. These are aids that help you get into a very deep state of relaxation very easily and without any prior experience.
I use this on a daily basis, while meditating. Some programs also include prerecorded suggestions that are intended to reach a certain goal (eg. More self confidence) and once your brain gets to that alpha state, these suggestions become very powerful. To learn more about the most powerful self hypnosis program, click here

3) Conversational hypnosis

This is without a doubt the most controversial form of hypnosis. The art of conversational hypnosis is to ‘hypnotize’ the person you are talking to and make him/her do what you tell them to without them having a clue about what is going on. You can imagine that when you get very good at this, you can pretty much do anything to anyone. This is what makes it controversial, because you decide how far you want to take this.
This technique is taught in some of the ‘how to talk a girl into your bed’ courses. One of those guys actually manages to walk up to celebrities and have them give him their phone number or invite him to their home. One of the most famous examples of this is when he saw Paris Hilton walking into a bakery and he talked her into giving him her phone number then and there.

Derren Brown shows us how far this can go, without harming other people. Take a look at the video below to see what is possible:

Pretty impressive, no? He also uses NLP, but I just wanted to show you how much you can affect another persons thoughts without them knowing it. How does conversational hypnosis work? Learn more here
